Scutellaria galericulata
Scutellaria galericulata (Skullcap)
Lamiaceae (Mint Family)

Montane.  Wetlands, meadows.  Summer.
Haviland Lake, July 1, 2005.

Scutellaria galericulata is circumboreal in its distribution and is found in almost all western states of the United States, across the northern tier of states, and throughout Canada.  The plant likes to have wet roots, grows to about a foot tall, and flowers singly or in pairs at the leaf axils.  Leaves are on very short stems or are stemless, are deeply veined, and often have fine teeth.  Flowers are soft violet, pink, and white.

Linnaeus named this genus and species in 1753.  "Scutell" is Latin for "dish" and alludes to the protruding lower dish-like lip of the flower.  "Galericulata" is Latin for "little helmet".
