Schoenocrambe linifolia.  Synonym: Sisymbrium linifolium.
Brassicaceae (Mustard Family)

Foothills. Woodlands. Spring.
Prater Ridge Trail, Mesa Verde National Park, June 7, 2005.

Schoenocrambe linifolia has bright yellow flowers surmounting tall slender stems with few narrow leaves.  It is common to find dense clusters of these plants with numerous flowers on each plant.  They often mix with Penstemon strictus in such areas as Mesa Verde National Park.  Schoenocrambe linifolia's leaves are blue-green.

Nuttall named this species Nasturtium linifolium from a specimen that Wyeth collected in 1833, but Edward Greene realized that the specimen did not belong to the Nasturtium genus and he named a new genus, Schoenocrambe, for the plant in 1896.  "Schoinos" is Greek for "reed" or "rope" referring to the long almost leafless form of the plant.  "Crambe" is the Greek name for "Cabbage".  "Linifolia" is from the Latin for "linear leaves".
